Town and Sheffield United played out a 0-0 draw of the more exciting kind at Bramall Lane this afternoon. Both defences impressed in a game which improved as it went along with the last fifteen minutes end-to-end with either side having chances to win it.

A much-changed Town side deservedly beat an equally much-changed Middlesbrough side 3-1 at Portman Road to go through to round four of the Worthington Cup. The Blues went one-up in the second minute through Thomas Gaardsøe before Jamie Clapham and then Darren Bent increased the lead. Franck Queudrue hit a late consolation for the Teessiders.

Town fell to another home league defeat, their second in a week, this time to Crystal Palace. The Blues went behind to an Andy Johnson goal but got on back on terms as Darren Ambrose headed his eighth goal of the season. However, Danny Butterfield gave the points to the South Londoners late in the day.

Joe Royle's Town reign got off to a winning start as his side beat Slovan Liberec 1-0 at Portman Road. The victory, gained via a 68th minute Darren Bent goal, kept Town's 40-year unbeaten home European run going and sets up the second leg in the Czech Republic perfectly.

Town fans left Portman Road angry and depressed once again as Gillingham took three points back to Kent. A Mamady Sidibe goal in the first half, again after Town had failed to defend a corner, was enough to take Andy Hessenthaler's side to victory.

An 89th minute equaliser from Dimitrios Papadopoulos gave Burnley a point they probably deserved on the strength of their second half performance. Once again Town were patchy, despite going ahead inside the first minute through a John McGreal header. After Gnohere had equalised Darren Ambrose hit another stunner to put the Blues ahead at half-time.

Yet another woeful Town display saw a 4,000 strong following return to Suffolk after a defeat to Reading and pondering which manager might be capable enough of turning the club around. Town were two-down after a disastrous first 45 minutes for the team as a whole and for Andy Marshall in particular. A second half fightback was halted when Pablo Couñago was shown a red card.

A professional display and a Marcus Bent penalty took Town into the UEFA Cup second round as FK Sartid from Smederevo in Serbia were beaten 1-0, about 250 Blues fans making the trip.

Town fell to another defeat as Horatio Carbonari returned to action after a seven month absence with the crucial goal just before half-time. Controversial referee Keith Hill, keeper Andy Marshall and Hermann Hreidarsson all had fingers pointed at them as the unmarked Argentinian tapped home from a yard or so out from a freekick which the keeper had failed to claim.
